In 1965-66 when the Esfahan Steel Company was established, to supply the energy required for the mentioned company, prospecting, exploring and utilizing Kerman Coal Mines were taken into consideration by the government. Thus, concerning initial information and geologist’s reports regarding the presence of coal in north of Kerman Province, geological studies were started in this area in the form of a company named “Kerman Coal Company” affiliated to Iran Steel Company.
This company, with cooperation of former Russian experts, succeeded in prospecting the above-mentioned mineral (having proper quality in supplying metallurgy coke required by Steel Company) in 70 to 190 Km, northwest of center of this province with an area of over 800 square kilometers in Triassic and Jurassic sedimentary formation.
Coal Company now acts in five mineral areas (Hashooni, Hamkar, Hojedk, Pabedana, Komsar and Abnil) and Zarand Coal Washing Company.
Mines reserves amount:
In an initial estimation, the reserves amount in the above-mentioned areas was anticipated more than one milliard and four hundred million Tons; the real amount, however, is 226 million Tons.
Extraction amount and mines used materials:
Average coal extracted in 10 recent years is 850 Tons. Also, materials used in these mines are wood, ignition materials, arch and mineral tools and equipment.
